Work-Based Learning Works: Lee’na Reyes

Lee’na Reyes, a senior in the Cosmetology program at Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES, is set to pursue her passion after honing her hands-on skills and learning the professionalism of a salon environment.
Through the Work-Based Learning program at BOCES, Reyes has observed eight stylists at Studio B, a salon in Ithaca. The salon offers a range of services, including haircuts, color and treatments, as well as bridal services, nail care and waxing.
Reyes says her time at the salon has helped her strengthen her technical skills and her approach to customer service.
“My professional development has improved, both in basic employment skills, as well as being more thorough when it comes to hands-on skills like foiling and washing hair. I have also learned new ways to consult with clients, ensuring a great experience from start to finish for them.”
She’s also noticed that her skills and knowledge she obtained in this real-world setting are reflected in her work in the Cosmetology program. The goal of the program is to prepare students for the New York State Cosmetology Licensing exams required for professional work. Students must earn 1,000 hours of instruction, and 125 of these can be completed through work-based learning, like Reyes’ time at Studio B.
“Students who participate in these experiences build relationships with professionals in the community, learn how real salon businesses operate, and are exposed to diverse services and clientele,” said Cosmetology teacher Mary Conley.
Studio B owner Lisa Amato and stylist Jessica Creswell believe these opportunities help bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world application. They explained that hosting a student helps build a pipeline of motivated, well-prepared future professionals who understand salon culture, expectations, and workflow. Her mentors have observed more than one client complimenting Reyes on her professionalism and helpfulness, and have watched her grow in confidence. They also commended Reyes for her willingness to learn and taking initiative to improve workflow.
Those are just a few of the reasons Reyes plans to return to Studio B after graduating.
“This is the salon I want to work at after graduation,” Reyes said. “This has affirmed that this is exactly what I want to do for my future career.”
